چکیده
inhibition of pacemaker output in pacemaker-dependent patients and/or false triggering with tracking to the upper rate limit in patients with reduced left ventricular function may be detrimental. Therefore, we cannot support the approach of Martin and co-workers—that is, to leave the pacemaker sensing function activated. In contrast, we recommend deactivating the sensing function in pacemaker-dependent patients by programming the pacemaker device to an asynchronous mode, to ensure continuous pacing, and to program the pacemaker device to a sensing-only mode (0X0) or subthreshold pacing in nonpacemaker-dependent patients to avoid MRI-related triggering.

Cardiac hypertrophy and oxidative stress: a leap of faith or stark reality?
It is well known that cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, valvular dysfunction, and myocardial infarction are associated with cardiac hypertrophy, which is itself an independent risk factor for sudden death. Less certain, however, is the identity of the molecular mechanisms involved in the hypertrophic process. The role of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of diseases like hyper...
متن کاملThe Faith of Science and the Method of Religion: The View of an Experimentalist
A fundamental teaching of the Bahá’í Faith is that science and religion are harmonious and complementary. Two themes are presented. First, religious faith, in its best form, is shaped by a process of critical inquiry instead of being defended against such a process. By comparison, science does not operate by logical deduction alone but also by a process of generalization. That is, the validatio...
متن کاملA Leap of Faith: The Role of Trust in Higher Education Teaching
The importance of trust to ‘good’ teaching in higher education is comparatively neglected compared to work focused on the use of techniques to develop active learning and reflective processes. This paper applies concepts from the management and marketing literature to identify why students entering higher education must do so largely on the basis of trust or a ‘leap of faith’. It als...
